Farm Worklog Mar. 8, 2024

Mostly repotting seedlings today: the orange caesalpinias, all the regular albizia julibrisson (like, nearly seventy yikes), the moringa, the yucca baccata, the polka dot plant, the seedless tomatoes, plus some bonus Malabar spinach that were growing in them (accidentally dumped the Malabar spinach pot into the bag of soil oops). Repotted the Cherokee Purple tomatoes, a few of the Rosy Finch.

Sowed: rosemary, Green pepper basil, mealy sage(?), lantanas, and the desert willow. Two more tomatoes: Mexico Midget and Fahrenheit Blues, and another pepper, Ancho Poblano.

Sprouts: nearly all the zinnias have sprouts, the Sacred Lotus, safflower, a bunch of the basils

Can’t sleep so I sowed some herbs: three basils, Peruvian, Blue Spice, and Cinnamon, mountain mint, lemon mint, and bergamot.

Also started some snake plant cuttings.

Update, 10:40am: sorted some of the wildflower seeds. Note to self: don’t just throw them all in a tray this year. What a PITA. I accidentally knocked the dregs of the tray onto the floor at the end, gave up and swept the mess into the trash. Composing a wild harvesting kit to keep in my car from now on, to prevent such fiascos in the future. Will update on that when I actually get it done.

Sprouts galore today! Basil, zinnia, more succulents (lithops, frithia pulchra, several of the haworthia), the paulownia tomentosa, the moringa, the Malabar spinach, English thyme, a bunch more of the yucca baccata. The caesalpinias are booming, the Albizia are looking really cute, the tomatoes are FIRE. So much potting to do tomorrow.

Soaking the Cranberry hibiscus

Sprouts: the caesalpinias continue to break soil with moderate vigor, as well as the Palo Verde. More tiny sprouts among the succulents, the anacampseros telaphiastrum, the first of the lithops, the Rose of Texas one, and both astrophytums are showing sprouts. Also the Pink Manila has three tiny beebs.

Sowed the first batch of Zinnia: Summer Pinwheels, Candy Cane Mix, Ice Queen, Lavender Gem, Thumbelina, State Fair Mix, Oklahoma Mix, Giant Cactus, Jazzy Red, and Dwarf Pumila. Lots more to go, gotta go mix up more potting mix.

Sowed two more of the passionflowers: red rover, and orange. Soaking the Sacred Lotus and Mexican Buckeye, and Yaupon(?) that I picked up at Walmart in the parking lot.

Soaking all the Morning Glory: Red Picotee, Blue Picotee, Clarke’s Heavenly Blue, Choice Mixed Colors, Flying Saucers, Milky Way, Grandpa Ott, Sunrise Serenade, Carnival of Venice, Dwarf Tri Color. Also a packet of Moonflower (Evening Glory White).

Soaking: Purple Forest Guava, lantana, desert willow.

Sprouts: all the tomatoes have sprouts now, some of the Extremely Vigorously. The first of the tiny succulents is Monilaria moniliformis, proving that at least those seeds ca remain viable for a long time.

I potted up a few of the Albizia and Caesalpinia for myself, respectively: regular and EHW, the Mex, Pink, Yellow and Orange. No sprouting on the reds yet, butt if they don’t, they were free bonus seeds anyway so no loss.
