Sowed: Red and Green Finger Limes; Dawn Redwood (Metesequoia glyptostroboides); Thuja occidentalis; Pink Manuka, Variegated African Violet; Paulownia tomentosa; caesalpinia pulcherrima, orange flower version.

I also forgot to log that I sowed some Yuccas: baccata, capensis, and whipplei, all fruiting varieties for the farm, the day before I started logging everything here. Oops.

Soaking jacaranda mimosifolia, Paolo Verde (parkinisonia aculeata)

Cold stratified Pinus Aristata (6 weeks); Mugo Pine (6 weeks); Japanese White Pine (Pinus parviflora) (4 weeks); Jacaranda acutifolia (4 weeks); Purple Jacaranda (?) (4 weeks); Purple Smoke Tree (Cotinus coggyria) (4 weeks)

prepping to sow the haworthia hybrid seeds, the pots need to drain a bit before I put the seeds in the soil.

Cold stratified French Wild Lavender (L. dentata) (4 weeks); Wintergreen (gaultheria procumbens) (6 weeks); Szechuan Pepper (Zanthoxylum simulans) (6 weeks); American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) (4 weeks); Mountain Snow Berry (Gaultheria depressa) (3 weeks); Azarole (Crataegus azarolus) (6 weeks); and Three Leaf Akebia (Akebia trifoliata) (4 weeks)

I also put the catnip seeds in the freezer with the strawberry seeds, and am soaking a packet of plumeria seeds. The latter are likely not viable after so long but no reason not to try. I put a drop of fish fertilizer in the water and ye gods does that stuff STINK. I got it all over the counter lolsob.

Pre-soaked the caesalpinias, (pink, red, orange, regular(?) and Mexican); mimosas, regular and EH Wilson; Hong Kong Orchid Tree; and cassia javanica. Also did the 1% bleach solution for the sambucus mexicana. (Blue elderberry)

I was a little bad and ordered more seeds. Yuzu, Rangpur Lime, Purple Forest Guava, Golden Alexandria Strawberry, Sacred Lotus(!), Wormwood, Patchouli, Peruvian Basil, Chinese Mahogany, Green Pepper Basil, Wild Arugula, and Curry Plant, from Trade Winds Fruit.

Also I bought a fancy mandarin orange at the Asian market we went to on Saturday, and it was full of seeds.  I know oranges don’t usually grow true from seed, but I’m going to plant them anyway and see what I get. If nothing else, they’ll make good bonsai stock.

Currently sorting through the herbs to update my spreadsheet.

Spacecat Farm Worklog, Feb. 23, 2024

Today, we have put three varieties of guava seeds to soak—I’ve found the easiest way to germinate them in to just put them in a tiny container with water and wait for them to sprout. The varieties are Hawaiian Pink Guava (Psidium guajava); Strawberry Guava (Psidium cattleianum); and Yellow Strawberry Guava (Psidium cattleianum var lucidum); all from Trade Winds Fruit.

Put the strawberry seeds in the freezer: Ferry Morse ‘Alpine’; Mignonette and Heirloom Pineapple from Renee’s Garden, Baron von Solemacher, source unknown, possibly Etsy; White Soul from Baker Creek

Cold stratified some Dwarf pomegranate (Punica granatum) (4 weeks), Chinese Kadsura (Kadsura longipedunculata), (3 weeks) and Baby Kiwi (Actinidia arguta) (4 weeks). All from Trade Winds Fruit
